Town of Palm Beach prepares for dredging in Palm Beach Harbor
The Town will begin operations in mid-February, partnering with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a sand placement project on the island's north end. This stage of the Town’s overall Coastal Management Plan includes dredging operations in Palm Beach Harbor. The Army Corps of Engineers will conduct the dredging and improve navigation safety and shoreline stability for the Town. The project will dredge 251,000 cubic yards of material from the harbor’s entrance channel and settling basins. The dredged material will eventually be placed along the Town of Palm Beach shoreline between Lake Worth Inlet and Kenlyn Road in Reaches 1 and 2, enhancing the area’s coastal resilience and replenishing the beach.
Weeks Marine, Inc. has been awarded the dredging contract. Once underway, dredging operations are anticipated to take up to five weeks to complete.
As a key element of this project, the process of “forepassing,” or movement of sand farther south in support of natural transport, will also be conducted. The Town selected Sea and Shoreline, LLC to provide excavation and truck hauling services. Sea and Shoreline will excavate sand from the Inlet to Esplanade Way and transport it south along the beach for placement in Reach 2, between Colonial Lane and Tradewind Drive. Construction access will occur via Palmo Way.
“We are committed to ensuring the success of this project to maintain the functionality of Palm Beach Harbor while also supporting the town’s shoreline restoration efforts,” said Melissa Ceriale, Chairman of the Town of Palm Beach Shore Protection Board.
These projects are all part of the Town’s overall Coastal Management Plan, which provides a strategic framework for implementing beach renourishment, dune restoration, and other measures to combat erosion. Coastal projects help to minimize erosion and improve beach aesthetics, ensuring a safe environment for residents and visitors.
“We urge residents to learn more about this particular project and all of the projects included in our comprehensive Coastal Management Plan,” said Ceriale. “We all have a stake in being vigilant stewards and protecting our piece of paradise.”
For more information about the Palm Beach Harbor Maintenance Dredging Project and many other projects, the Town encourages residents to attend our next Shore Protection Board meeting on January 30, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. Residents unable to attend in person may watch the meeting on the Town’s public meeting webpage.
