Carbondale Police Press Release - Reckless Discharge of a Firearm

CARBONDALE – On November 20, 2024, at 10:36 p.m., City of Carbondale police officers responded to the 300 block of South Marion Street for a report of a person who had been shot. Officers located the victim, age 16 of Carbondale, with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the emergency room for medical treatment. During the investigation, officers learned four juvenile acquaintances were mishandling a firearm which resulted in the victim getting shot accidentally. The firearm believed to have been involved was recovered by officers. The gun had been previously reported stolen from a vehicle in Carbondale. The juvenile male who fired the shot was arrested for Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and released to parents after consulting with the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office. The suspect’s name will not be released, per the Illinois Juvenile Justice Act. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the police department at the numbers listed below.
