Troy to collect real Christmas trees for recycling;
Participation encouraged between January 2 and January 13, 2025

TROY, NY (Dec 26) – Mayor Mantello today announced that the City’s Quality of Life Action crews will be collecting real Christmas trees during weekly curbside collection beginning in January.

“As part of our continued Quality of Life Action efforts in our city and prioritizing sustainable disposal practices that are environmentally responsible and economically sensible, the City of Troy will be picking up real Christmas trees and offering Christmas tree free drop-offs at the Alamo starting in January,” said Troy Mayor Carmella R. Mantello.“

Troy’s Quality of Life Action Crews encourage residents to place their real Christmas trees at the curb for recycling as a part of their regular curbside collection between January 2 and January 13, 2025.

Alternatively, residents may bring real Christmas trees to the Troy Resource Management Facility (Alamo) located on the corner of Main St. and E. Industrial Parkway on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9am to 1pm between January 2 and January 13, 2025.

Real Christmas trees can be turned into mulch or allowed to naturally break down over time. Keeping real Christmas trees out of the landfill allows them to be used to build stronger soil in Troy.

Please note: only "real" trees will be accepted.

Residents are asked to follow the below instructions to ensure their real Christmas tree may be recycled:
1.    Take all ornaments, lights and decorations off of the tree, and remove the tree stand;
2.    Place the Christmas tree next to your recycling and garbage on your normal collection day;
3.    Troy Quality of Life Action crews will pick up the tree.

Mayor Mantello concluded, “The Christmas tree recycling program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to protect our City’s environment.”
