SRPD News Release:  Traffic stop yields firearm arrest

On 7/17/2024 at 2:37pm, an SRPD officer was on patrol and noticed a vehicle being operated without a front license plate, violating 5200(a) VC.  The officer made an enforcement stop at the Corby Av offramp at Highway 101 and contacted two occupants in the vehicle.  The officer could detect a very strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and observed loose bud marijuana scattered throughout the interior.  After several fake names, the two occupants were eventually identified as Elman Mejia Mazariegos, a 21 year old San Rafael resident, and Husvardo Escobar Lopez, a 25 year old San Rafael resident.  A search of the vehicle revealed a single 9mm bullet in the center console.  The officer located a privately manufactured 9mm pistol in the trunk of the vehicle.

Mazariegos was booked into Sonoma County Jail for felony 25400(a)(1) PC Carry Concealed Firearm, felony 24610 PC Undetectable firearm, misdemeanor 11357(b)(2) HS Possess Marijuana over 28.5 grams, and misdemeanor 11350(a) HS Possess controlled substance.

Escobar Lopez was booked into Sonoma County Jail for an outstanding Contra Costa County warrant for felony vehicle theft.
