Road Rage Shooting Ends with Two Arrests

On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at approximately 11:40 a.m., a Santa Rosa Police Department Field & Evidence Technician was towing a vehicle in 900 block of Pressley Street, when she witnessed the driver of a black Volkswagen Tiguan fire a gun from his vehicle into the back glass of a grey Nissan Altima. Both vehicles fled the area westbound on Pressley Street immediately following the shooting. The Field & Evidence Technician immediately used her portable radio to advise the SRPD Communications Center of the situation, and provided responding officers with vehicle descriptions and where they were last seen.

As officers descended on the area, the two vehicles reached Santa Rosa Avenue and began driving northbound. The driver of the Nissan Altima saw multiple marked police vehicles and pulled over to the side of the road. The driver of the Volkswagen Tiguan identified later as William Kammerer (34), of Rohnert Park continued northbound in the southbound lanes of Santa Rosa Avenue at a high rate of speed. An SRPD sergeant driving a marked patrol car attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop on the vehicle, however, Kammerer failed to stop, and a short vehicle pursuit ensued. When Kammerer approached the area of Mendocino Avenue and Fifth Street, he abandoned the vehicle and attempted to run away from responding SRPD officers. As Kammerer entered a City of Santa Rosa parking garage in the 600 block of Third Street, a different sergeant with SRPD caught up to him and took him into custody. The firearm used in this incident, as well as one additional handgun, were later recovered in Kammerer’s vehicle.

Detectives with the SRPD Violent Crimes Investigations Team assumed the investigation and learned Kammerer and the driver of the Nissan Altima, a 20-year-old resident of Petaluma, were involved in a road rage incident when the initial shooting occurred. Both Kammerer and the victim were in the driver’s seats of their respective vehicles and carrying concealed firearms when they engaged in an argument near the intersection of Hendley Street and Pressley Street. Kammerer fired one round at the victim’s vehicle, shattering the back glass. The victim attempted to leave the area, but Kammerer followed and at some point, fired an additional two rounds at the victim. The victim fired at least one round at Kammerer’s vehicle in return prior to surrendering to SRPD officers. The victim’s firearm was recovered by officers. Fortunately, no one was injured during this incident.

Kammerer was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail for the following charges:
246 PC – Felony shooting into an occupied vehicle
245(b) PC – Felony assault with a deadly weapon, firearm
29900(a)(1) PC – Felon in possession of a firearm
2800.4 PC – Felony evading while driving against traffic
12022.5(a)(1) PC – Felony use of a firearm while in commission of a felony
148(a) PC – Misdemeanor obstruction of a public officer

The victim was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail for the following charges:
25850(c)(6) PC – Felony possession of a firearm
25400(a)(1) PC – Felony possession of a concealed firearm

Due to the fact the victim is a victim of a violent crime, his name will not be released.

Santa Rosa Police Department case number 24-4876.
