Contact for illegal marijuana use leads to arrest for illegal firearm possession.

On 4/10/24, at approximately 5:57 PM, Officers from the Santa Rosa Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) were conducting a security check to the rear of several business in the 3400 block of Cleveland Aven. 

The Officers located several subjects who were seated in vehicles and smoking marijuana in violation of 11362.3(a)(1) H&S.  As the Officers went to contact the subjects about the violation, one subject exited one of the vehicles and began running south from the location.   One SET Officer chased the suspect while the other remained with the vehicles and subjects.

The Officer was able to catch up to 26-year-old Santa Rosa resident Alejandro Mejia.  Mejia tripped, fell, and spontaneously told the officer that he had a handgun in his waistband. 

Mejia was taken into custody without incident.  He was in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun which was not registered to him. 

Mejia was subsequently arrested and booked at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility for the listed charges:
25850(a) PC- Possession of a loaded handgun not registered (Felony)
25400(a)(1) PC- Possession of concealed handgun in a vehicle (Felony)
148(a)(1) PC - Resisting arrest (misdemeanor)
