SRPD Investigates Fatal Vehicle vs Pedestrian Collision

On Tuesday March 26th at approximately 6:15am, Santa Rosa Police Officers and Medical Personnel were dispatched to the intersection of College Avenue and Orchard Street regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian collision. Several witnesses called 911 to report the collision.

SRPD officers arrived on scene and located a female lying in the roadway of College Avenue just west of the intersection with Orchard Street. It was apparent that she had significant injuries and was pronounced deceased immediately by medical personnel.

Also at the scene was a grey Chevy Silverado pickup truck with front end damage. The driver of the Chevy, a 21-year-old Sonoma County resident, had remained on scene. He was not injured.

SRPD accident investigators arrived on scene and interviewed the driver of the Chevy and several witnesses. The initial investigation has shown that the female pedestrian was crossing College Avenue northbound at the intersection with Orchard Street. She appears to have been in the cross walk a that location, but it doesn’t appear she had activated the flashing lights, based on witness statements. The female was just about to the other side of the crosswalk when she was struck by the Chevy as it was traveling westbound on College Avenue.

The driver of the Chevy has been cooperating with the investigation. The driver showed no signs of impairment and speed does not appear to be a factor. It is unclear if the pedestrian was walking or running in the crosswalk and at the time of day of the accident, it was still dark outside.

College Avenue was closed between Beaver and Humboldt Street briefly while the scene was investigated. At this time, the names of the driver and deceased female will not be released, pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information regarding this collision are encouraged to contact Officer Zepeda at 707-543-3636.
