SNOW EMERGENCY DECLARED

(Kirksville, MO) - The City of Kirksville is declaring a Snow Emergency beginning at 11:00 pm on February 1, 2022. All vehicles parked on designated Snow Emergency Routes, including City streets in the Downtown, and / or Central Business District, must be moved within two hours, or by 1:00 am, February 2, 2022.  If vehicles are not moved by 1:00 am, February 2, 2022, they will be ticketed and / or towed (per the Municipal Code). The Snow Emergency will remain in place until terminated.

If this storm develops as forecast, it is imperative that vehicles stay out of the Downtown / Central Business District so City crews can remove the snow. The City encourages all residents to be off the roads until snow is cleared. The National Weather Service has forecast 5 to 12 inches of snow as part of this storm. If the snow reaches these depths, plowing and cleanup will be difficult, especially in the Downtown / Central Business District. Residents can also expect street closures for snow removal operations.

The City would like to emphasize that it shall be unlawful for any person or persons, contractors, Downtown businesses, or government buildings to remove any snow or ice from private property, parking lots, or alleys and place or cause to be placed such snow or ice on any public street, alley, sidewalk, or other public place. Additionally, the owners, agent or occupants of any real property within the city shall keep the sidewalk along and in front of the property owned or occupied by or under their charge or keep clean from snow and ice, and, after a snowfall, such owners, occupants or persons in control or charge of such property shall, within twenty-four (24) hours after such snowfall, cause such snow on their sidewalks to be removed. Citizens responsible for sidewalks that could be covered by City crews during street snow removal are encouraged to wait until the streets are cleared before clearing their sidewalks.

The City asks residents to monitor local media and City communication channels for further details. The City will issue a press release to terminate this Snow Emergency. For more information, please contact the Public Works Department at 660.627.1291. Residents are encouraged to read the Municipal Code of Ordinance for more details about Snow Emergencies, Emergency Snow Routes, and snow removal in general at www.kirksvillecity.com/municipalcode.
