Governor Murphy Declares State of Emergency for Propane Shortage

Effective 9:00 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, Governor Phil Murphy has declared a State of Emergency in response to anticipated disruptions in propane delivery caused by a service interruption at a major distribution plant in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. The declaration enables expanded transportation capabilities to help ensure uninterrupted heating fuel supply for New Jersey residents and businesses.

“As temperatures continue to drop, ensuring that every person has access to a safe, warm environment is essential,” said Governor Murphy. “This Executive Order ensures the approximately 186,000 New Jerseyans who rely on propane can receive it without interruption. Keeping homes heated and families secure is our top priority.”

What the State of Emergency Does

Under a federal waiver permitted during a declared emergency:

  • Maximum driving time for propane transport operators is extended from 11 to 14 hours.

  • Drivers must still complete 10 consecutive hours of off-duty time between driving periods.

  • The order remains in effect until the State determines the emergency no longer exists.

These measures increase delivery capacity to meet heating needs during periods of high demand and supply disruption.
