Irvington Alerts

From the Mayor’s Desk…June 6, 2024

Summer is almost here and I am pleased to be able to update you on several upcoming celebrations in the Village, including the Pride Celebration on June 8th, Irvington High School Graduation Parade on June 15th, Juneteenth Celebration on June 22nd and July 4th Fireworks.  In this newsletter I will also provide a brief update on activity relating to deer management in the Irvington Woods and the Village’s efforts to adopt a Climate Action Plan.

Celebrations
    The Village’s Pride Celebration will occur at Main Street School from 3PM – 5PM on June 8th and will feature the music of Old Dogs New Tricks and children’s book readings by Greg Allen, Manager of the Irvington’s Town Hall Theater.
    Please come out to Main Street on June 15th at 8:30AM to cheer on the Irvington High School Class of 2024 as they make their way to Matthiessen Park for their graduation ceremony. Congratulations to the graduating class!
    Our Juneteenth Celebration will take place from 1PM – 5PM on June 22nd at Villa Lewaro, 67 North Broadway, and will recognize the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker with music, a keynote by A’Lelia Bundles, the great-great granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker, an honorary street naming of Madam C.J. Walker Way and other activities.
    The July 4th Fireworks will occur at sunset in Matthiessen Park (rain date July 5th).
    If you have not taken the time to enjoy the bulldog statues in the Main Street area, I encourage you to do so. The Irvington Arts and Culture Committee did wonderful work planning and installing our Bulldog Celebration on June 2nd.

Irvington Woods
In my May 1, 2024 Letter from the Mayor’s Desk, I described what the Village Board has done in connection with the Irvington Woods Committee’s deer management plan, including, among other things, public meetings, a hearing and consultation with numerous experts for and against bow hunting (the approach to deer management recommended by the Woods Committee). The majority of the Board has expressed at a work session a position in favor of employing a single bow hunter to manage the deer population in the Irvington Woods. The Board and Village staff are diligently working on resolving remaining details so a vote on the matter can be taken by the Board.

Climate Action Plan
At our meeting on June 17, 2024, my Board colleagues and I will be considering the adoption of Irvington’s Government Operation Climate Action Plan (GOCAP). Eighteen months in the making, the GOCAP was developed using funds from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and in conjunction with the Hudson Valley Regional Council and ten other municipalities. The plan sets a course towards achieving significant reduction of carbon emissions generated by the Village’s operations.

The draft plan was presented to us and to the community earlier this year by our Sustainability Director Charlotte Binns and volunteers Nicola Coddington and Warwick Norton. We look forward to adopting and releasing the report later this month. For more information about the plan, visit: https://www.irvingtongreen.org/climate/climate-planning

I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Village celebrations.

Regards,

Jon Siegel, Mayor
