Carbondale Police Press Release - Business Burglary and Criminal Damage to Property

CARBONDALE –  On October 1, 2026, at 12:42 p.m., City of Carbondale Police Officers responded to a business in the 2100 block of West Main Street regarding a reported business burglary.   Officers learned the suspect damaged an air conditioning unit on the roof and began investigating the incident.  At approximately 8:10 p.m., officers received information that the subject may have returned to the location. Officers searched the roof of the business and found burglary tools and Lewis A. Walsingham, 34, of East St. Louis, hiding inside a hollowed-out air conditioner unit.  Walsingham was arrested for Burglary and Criminal Damage to Property. Walsingham was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail pending a detention hearing.   The Carbondale Fire Department and Jackson County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the investigation.
