Updated Recruitment Announcement for Assistant City Manager Position

CARBONDALE, IL — The City of Carbondale is accepting applications for the position of Assistant City Manager, seeking a highly qualified and strategic professional to join the City's executive leadership team. The position will work directly with the City Manager to enhance organizational capacity, improve interdepartmental coordination, and advance key City priorities.


The Assistant City Manager will provide leadership on strategic initiatives and special projects while supporting day-to-day municipal operations. Responsibilities include coordinating major City initiatives, overseeing grant development and administration, supervising public relations and communications, tourism and community promotion, and violence prevention programs, while fostering partnerships that enhance the quality of life for Carbondale residents.

The City is seeking a candidate with demonstrated leadership ability, strong communication and organizational skills, strategic thinking, and experience managing multiple initiatives. A Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Urban Planning, Business Administration, Public Policy or related field is required. Master’s degree (MPA or related) preferred along with five to seven years of supervisory experience.

Located in the heart of Southern Illinois, Carbondale offers the amenities of a regional center while maintaining the character of a welcoming community. The position offers a competitive salary ranging from $114,000 to $123,150, depending on qualifications and experience, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
