Emergency Snow Routes
CARBONDALE - Emergency Snow Routes
As the National Weather Service forecasts potentially hazardous winter weather for the upcoming weekend, the City of Carbondale is actively preparing to respond. A press release (reference here) has been put out with full information regarding emergency snow routes, shelters, and safety tips for winter storms.
We are now releasing each subject individually for assurance of receiving and ease of taking in information.
Emergency Snow Routes
If a winter emergency is declared, residents should know the following:
-
Parking is prohibited on streets with signage designating them as Emergency Snow Routes.
-
A snow emergency is automatically displayed when an accumulation of snow and ice exceeds 2 inches.
-
All vehicles that are parked along the snow route during a snow emergency will be towed at the owner’s expense.
-
In the event of inclement weather, residents are encouraged to move vehicles to a driveway, garage, or side street.
Public Works is currently preparing for snow & ice removal. Emergency Snow Routes (see map here) will be prioritized for clearance as well as roads that pose risks that include bridges, curves, hills, etc. Residential areas will follow once emergency routes are cleared. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as our limited staff will be working as diligently as possible to clear all areas needed. We will post alerts if any road closures occur.
Note that vehicles will be towed only if necessary. If a vehicle is creating a safety hazard it will be relocated- the Police Department will keep a log of what vehicles are towed where, so if your vehicle is missing contact the Police Department at 618-457-3200.
Contact the Maintenance and Environmental Services Department at 618-457-3275 if you have questions regarding emergency snow routes.
In case of inclement weather, Refuse & Recycling schedules may be delayed until conditions are suitable for operation. The refuse & recycling reschedule routes will follow the 2026 Holiday Schedule. If delayed further, we will inform residents of new route schedule.
