CARBONDALE – On November 21, 2025, at approximately 2:50 a.m., Carbondale Police Officers responded to the 500 block of S. Graham to investigate a shooting. The 911 caller reported they had been attacked inside their residence by a known acquaintance armed with a firearm. The suspect acquaintance struck the victim with the firearm during the attack and the victim defended themself by firing a firearm at the suspect acquaintance during the attack. The 17-year-old juvenile suspect sustained two gunshot wounds as a result. The suspect was taken by ambulance to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and has since been transferred to an out-of-state hospital for further treatment in stable condition. The victim sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention.
Officers arrested a second juvenile suspect for charges related to the battery offense that started the incident. This juvenile has been charged with Armed Robbery, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Mob Action, and Battery. The second juvenile suspect was not injured and will be taken to the Jackson County Courthouse for a juvenile detention hearing. In accordance with the Illinois Juvenile Justice Act, the names of the juvenile suspects will not be released. A Civic Ready Alert was sent out regarding the police presence in the area.
