Carbondale Police Press Release - Fatal Traffic Crash

CARBONDALE – On October 2, 2025, at 1:56 a.m., City of Carbondale Police Officers responded to the intersection of East Pleasant Hill Road and South Wall Street for a report of a single-vehicle traffic crash. Officers learned a vehicle believed to be traveling south on South Wall Street failed to stop at the intersection of East Pleasant Hill Road. The vehicle then left the roadway and struck a tree, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. The vehicle also caught fire. The driver, Daryl L. Norwood, 38, of Carbondale, was determined to be deceased at the scene due to injuries he sustained from the crash. There were no passengers in the vehicle. The Carbondale Police Department was assisted on this investigation by the Carbondale Fire Department, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, the Southern Illinois University Department of Public Safety, and the Illinois State Police.  Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the police department at the numbers listed below.
