City of Carbondale Awarded Nearly $2 Million Grant to Repave Key Streets

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CARBONDALE -
The City of Carbondale is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $1,989,063 grant to repave three important roadway corridors. This award requires no local matching funds, ensuring that the project will be completed at no cost to the City or residents.

The grant, awarded through the state’s largest-ever infrastructure program, will provide 100% funding for the following repaving projects:
  • W. College Street from S. Forest Avenue to S. University Avenue
  • W. Cherry Street from S. Oakland Avenue to S. Illinois Avenue
  • Poplar Street from W. Mill Street to W. Oak Street
This investment will enhance transportation safety, improve road conditions, and support long-term community development.

“This investment is a significant improvement for our neighborhoods and everyone who travels through Carbondale,” said City Manager Stan Reno. “By fully funding these repaving projects, the State is helping us improve safety, enhance our roadways and support the quality of life for our residents and visitors.  This will all be done without placing a financial burden on our community. We are grateful for this investment and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have across the City.”

The resurfacing project is part of Governor JB Pritzker’s statewide initiative to modernize infrastructure and strengthen local economies. More details about the program can be found on the Governor’s website: Gov. Pritzker Announces Largest Infrastructure Program in State History.

City officials will provide updates on the project timeline as planning and design progress in coordination with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
