Fwd: Morning update on road clearing operations Jan 22
1/22/2025 - 6:52 PM UTC
January 22, 2025 1:30pm
The sun has come out which is nice as our crews continue plowing, salting and sanding roads. They report that it is bitter cold outside, especially with the wind chill, as they reload trucks with sand, salt and brine. Our thermometer says 27 degrees with a real feel of about 13. Public Works has covered a widespread area of the city already, sanding/salting/brining major roads and collector streets from the western part of the city, eastward through downtown, and south across the bridge. Our priority is major routes and collector streets. We are unable to treat and plow every road and cul-de-sac in all of New Bern's individual communities. We will continue this operation until 5pm today, which is when we expect the roads will refreeze into black ice. Then, crews will start again first thing in the morning with salt, sand and brine.
No issues with power or water resources, which is good news. Our police and fire crews continue to respond to wrecks given the slippery conditions. Our police crews have reported that some state routes are still icy including Highway 70 through James City, Glenburnie Road from the college to MLK, along Simmons Street, and Neuse Boulevard from Chattawka to Broad Street. Please stay off the roads if you can so you can stay safe and we can keep our first responders safe too.
