Morning update on road clearing operations Jan 22
January 22, 2025 9:00am
Public Works crews have been out all night and again this morning running snow plows along major routes and collector streets. They're reapplying a brine solution and salt along roadways to facilitate melting. They're making great progress, but please be aware of black ice as roads refreeze. They'll continue plowing and treating roads until dark to clear away snow. Stay home if you can. The biggest thing working against us is sleep. These crews just don't quit. We are resting and rotating staff as best we can.
Please consider energy conservation during these extreme temperatures. An Emergency Energy Alert was issued by the Department of Public Utilities this morning, indicating an increase in local and regional demands for energy. We have no power outages to report this morning, which is good. Generally, power infrastructure can handle snow, it's icy conditions and fallen trees that are the most significant threat. We'll keep you posted on any situations that may arise.
If you must go out, please clear your vehicle of snow and make sure mirrors, windows and lights are clear and visible for your safety and the safety of others. Pack survival supplies like blankets, snacks and water in case your vehicle becomes disabled and you have to wait for roadside assistance. And allow plenty of extra time to get to your destination. Temps are in the 20s this morning and the real feel is in the single digits! Dress warmly in several layers if you must venture out.
We will make a decision this evening on city operations for Thursday. Please stay safe and warm!
