Smoke Testing in Your Neighborhood July 17 and 18

7/16/2024 - 12:19 PM
This is an alert that the City of New Bern Water Resources department will be conducting smoke testing in your neighborhood tomorrow and Thursday, July 17 and 18. Smoke testing is a way to find sections of sanitary sewer lines that have cracks, leaks or faulty connections that allow rainwater to infiltrate into sanitary sewers. This extra flow can overload lines and pumping stations and lead to sanitary sewer overflows and other issues. The smoke from the testing should not get into your home if your plumbing has been installed properly. However, if you have a dry trap in a rarely used water fixture, some smoke may vent through the drain. If this happens, do not panic. Open windows to allow ventilation. Notify smoke testing personnel in the area. And if you have doubts about the origin of the smoke, please call 9 1 1. The smoke that is used during this testing is harmless. For more information about smoke testing, call the City of New Bern Water Resources department at 639-7541.
