New Bern: Crosswalk Improvement Project Moves to Craven/Pollock Street

The downtown crosswalk improvement project continues with work beginning at Craven & Pollock Street first thing Tuesday morning, May 26. This intersection will be closed for approximately 2-3 weeks as all four crosswalks are replaced..

The intersection will be fenced off with directional signage for pedestrian crossing (see map below). Pedestrian access to all businesses will be maintained throughout the project but expect restricted vehicle access. Additionally, digital & static signage will be placed at the opposite end of each block alerting motorists there is a road closure ahead. Please note there will be no pedestrian crossing on Craven Street at the north end of the intersection – this will be a staging area for heavy equipment & project supplies.  City Hall will remain open & access to the Craven Street paid parking lot will be maintained.

This project is weather & construction dependent & we will post updates or changes to the construction schedule (if any) as soon as possible.

Once the Craven/Pollock Street intersection is complete, crews will move to the third crosswalk improvement area at Middle & S. Front Street. We will keep you abreast of that timeline. The first crosswalk improvement project - along Hancock & Pollock Street - was completed & reopened on Friday, May 22nd.

For questions about the crosswalk project, please call Public Works at (252)639-7503.

The 2026 crosswalks improvement project is funded by the Municipal Service District (MSD). For more information on the MSD, visit www.NewBernNC.gov/MSD.
