New Bern: Crosswalk Improvement Project Begins Monday, May 11
A crosswalk improvement project begins Monday, May 11 in downtown New Bern. Three intersections have been identified as part of the first phase of this project, including Hancock & Pollock streets, Craven & Pollock streets, and Middle & S. Front streets. (The first one you'll want to avoid, beginning Monday, is in the 400 block of Hancock Street.)
The project will include removing the asphalt surface, excavating below the current crosswalks to install new concrete bases & placing new brick pavers on the crosswalk surfaces. This will require the intersections to be closed, one at a time, for approximately 2-3 weeks at a time, so that contractor & staff crews can complete the work. Pedestrian access will be maintained to all residential & commercial buildings, but expect restricted vehicle access during excavation & new installation. Please watch for detours. You may also notice some parking spaces being reserved due to equipment requirements for these projects.
The first intersection is Hancock & Pollock streets. A new crosswalk will be installed on the east side of the intersection only. Again, this project will begin on Monday, May 11th. See image below.

The second intersection is Craven & Pollock streets. All four crosswalks will be replaced. This project will begin once the Hancock Street one is complete.
The last intersection to be closed will be Middle & S. Front streets. All four crosswalks will be replaced. This project will begin once the Craven & Pollock Street one is complete.
These projects are weather-dependent & construction dependent (meaning you never know what you might find underneath a 300+ year-old city!). Our goal is to complete all three intersections in the next 8 weeks. These projects were recommended by the Municipal Service District (MSD) Advisory Committee and approved by the Board of Aldermen. Funding support is provided by the MSD as well. For more information on the Municipal Service District, please visit www.NewBernNC.gov/MSD.
