SCAM ALERT from the City of New Bern
𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗠 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧: Cyber thieves are trying to take all your Christmas money! We've been made aware that these phishing emails are circulating again. The scammers are accessing public documents to find out who is applying for permits in New Bern, then sending them a fake invoice for payment (using the city logo & the names of city employees) to be paid by wire transfer. 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗔 𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗠!
Do not click on any links within the email or respond to the sender. Delete the email immediately.
The City of New Bern does not accept payment for any services via wire transfer. And our email domain is @ newbernnc.gov, so you'll know it's a fake if it doesn't come from that one. (Some of the scam emails appear to be coming from the email domain @ usa.com.) If you are unsure whether you have an outstanding balance for planning, zoning, permitting or inspection fees please call us at (252)639-7581. See a copy of the fake invoice below.
