Phishing Scam Email Circulating New Bern
SCAM ALERT: We have been made aware of a phishing scam email targeting local businesses & contractors. The scammers are accessing public documents to find out who is applying for new construction projects in New Bern. Then, they're creating fake invoices (using the city logo & the names of city employees) and sending them to the applicants soliciting fees to be paid by wire transfer. 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗔 𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗠!
The emails appear to come from the domain @ usa.com. Do not click on any links within the email or respond to the sender. Delete the email immediately.
The City of New Bern does not accept payment for any services via wire transfer. And our email domain is @ newbernnc.gov. If you are unsure whether you have an outstanding balance for planning, zoning, permitting or inspection fees please call us at (252)639-7581.
We have also been made aware of other municipalities whose customers have been affected by this scam. Do not fall victim and delete these emails immediately. We have provided photos of the fake invoice below. Here is a link to some useful tips on how to stay safe from scams.
