SRPD Investigates Fatal Vehicle Collision on Corby Avenue
On Saturday July 26th at approximately 3:14pm, Santa Rosa Police Officers, Fire, and Medical Personnel were dispatched to the 2800 hundred block of Corby Avenue, for a three-vehicle collision.
Multiple people called 911 to report the collision, including some of the individuals involved. They reported that a white Lexus SUV had side-swiped a red Toyota, and then struck a red Honda, head on.
SRPD Officers arrived on scene and discovered that the driver of the red Honda was unresponsive. She was pronounced as deceased almost immediately by medical personnel. The drivers of the white Lexus and the red Honda were also attended to by medical personnel and appeared to be uninjured.
The 2800 hundred block of Corby (fronting Corby Auto Row) was immediately shut down and closed to traffic. An SRPD Accident Investigator responded to the scene and took over the investigation, assisted by an SRPD Evidence Technician.
After speaking with witnesses and the drivers of the red Toyota and white Lexus, Investigators learned that the red Toyota was stopped, northbound on Corby, preparing to turn left into the Toyota dealership. The red Toyota had its turn signal on and was waiting for southbound traffic to clear. The white Lexus was traveling northbound on Corby, approaching the red Toyota.
The driver of the white Lexus suddenly swerved into the southbound lane of Corby Avenue and sideswiped the red Toyota, then hit the red Honda, head on. Investigators obtained videos from local car dealerships that confirmed the witness and driver’s statements.
The driver of the white Lexus was cooperative and spoke with investigators. He indicated that he did not realize the red Toyota had stopped until it was too late. He tried to avoid rear-ending the red Toyota. He stated he couldn’t swerve to the right because of vehicles parked on the east side of Corby Avenue, so he abruptly swerved to the left and into the on-coming traffic, hitting the red Honda. He indicated that he did not see the red Honda prior to the collision.
Accident Investigators are working to determine if alcohol and speed were factors in the collision. This follow-up is being conducted and SRPD will work with the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed against the driver of the white Lexus.
The name of the driver of the Lexus will not be released at this time. The name of the victim driver will also not be released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.
Corby Avenue, at the location of the collision, was closed for approximately 4 hours.
