SRPD News Release: Major Vehicle Collision Investigated on Fountaingrove Pkwy near Stagecoach Rd
Major Vehicle Collision Investigated on Fountaingrove Pkwy near Stagecoach Rd
On Thursday July 3rd at approximately 12:25pm, Santa Rosa Police Dispatch received several 911 calls regarding a collision on Fountaingrove Pkwy between Stagecoach Rd and Thomas Lake Harris. One of the callers stated that there was a “Really Bad Accident” in the westbound lane.
Santa Rosa Police, Fire, and Medical Personnel arrived on scene and located a Red Ford sedan and a White Chevy sedan, both with major damage. The drivers of both vehicles were still in their respective vehicles and appeared to have significant injuries. Both drivers were transported to local hospitals for emergency treatment.
The Santa Rosa Police Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene and took over the investigation as to the cause of the collision.
Based on witness statements, Investigators initially learned that the Chevy was traveling westbound on Fountaingrove Pkwy behind the Ford. The Chevy suddenly accelerated at a very high rate of speed and struck the back of the Ford, sending both vehicles into spins and causing collisions with trees that lined the roadway.
Investigators are still trying to determine why the Chevy suddenly accelerated, but it has been preliminarily determined that the elderly driver may have pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes as he traveled along the roadway. Based on their interview with the driver of the Chevy, investigators are also trying to determine if alcohol impairment may have been a contributing factor in the collision.
The female driver of the Ford had significant but non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized. Her name will not be released at this time. The male driver of the Chevy also remains hospitalized with injuries that are non-life threatening as well. His name will not be released at this time.
Fountaingrove Pkwy was closed for approximately four hours during the investigation.
