**Case Update** Victim and suspect identities confirmed in murder/suicide investigation

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at approximately 2:40 pm, officers with the Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD) responded to an apartment in the 1500 block of Atlanta Court to investigate a report of a possible domestic violence incident. Upon arrival, officers were unable to establish communications with the apartment’s occupants. They were advised by area residents that possible gunshots were heard approximately 20 minutes before the officers arrived on the scene.

Members of the SRPD Hostage Negotiations team responded and made numerous attempts to establish communications with the residents of the upstairs apartment, but all were unsuccessful. Due to the exigency of the situation and lack of communication with the involved parties, the SRPD Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) and a SWAT Medic with the Santa Rosa Fire Department (SRFD) entered the apartment. At approximately 4:30 pm, SWAT officers discovered two deceased adults, a male and a female, in a back bedroom. The female decedent appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and the male decedent suffered at least one gunshot wound.

The SRPD Violent Crimes Investigations Team (VCI) and SRPD Field Evidence Technicians (FET) responded to the residence and assumed the investigation. Multiple firearms registered to the male decedent were recovered, including an assault rifle believed to be the weapon used in this shooting.

The Sonoma County Coroner has identified the deceased as Emily Hemming and Vicente Carrillo-Cedillo, both aged 24 at the time of their deaths. Both Hemming and Carrillo-Cedillo died of gunshot wounds. VCI detectives believe Carrillo-Cedillo died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting Hemming multiple times with an assault rifle.

The initial investigation determined that Hemming and Carrillo-Cedillo were in a dating relationship and living together at the Atlanta Court apartment at the time of the shooting. The couple had moved from Southern California to Santa Rosa in 2022, and neither had any children. There were no previous documented reports of domestic violence involving either person in Santa Rosa or Southern California. This is an ongoing investigation, and further details may be released as they become available.

This is the eighth homicide and second murder/suicide in the City of Santa Rosa in 2025.

SRPD is conducting a homicide investigation following a shooting on Atlanta Court

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at approximately 2:40 pm, the Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD) Communications Center received a call about a possible domestic violence incident in an apartment located in the 1500 block of Atlanta Court. The caller was not at the residence but had received information via telephone about the incident. Officers immediately responded to the apartment but were unable to make contact with any occupants of the residence. The officers continued to investigate the situation and learned area residents had heard what they believed to be several gunshots approximately 20 minutes prior to police arriving on the scene.

Due to reports of gunshots and the probability of an armed person within the apartment, residents of the additional three apartments in the 4-plex apartment were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. Numerous attempts to contact the residents of the apartment were made by members of the SRPD Hostage Negotiations Team, but all were unsuccessful. Members of the SRPD Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT), including a Santa Rosa Fire Department (SRFD) SWAT Medic, quickly responded to the scene. Additional attempts to communicate with the occupants of the apartment continued to be unsuccessful.

At approximately 4:30 pm, members of the SWAT team entered the apartment and shortly thereafter, they located two deceased people inside a back bedroom, both of whom appeared to have gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced deceased by the SRFD SWAT Medic at the scene.

Detectives with the SRPD Violent Crimes Investigations Team (VCI) and SRPD Field Evidence Technicians responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Detectives have preliminarily identified the decedents as a 24-year-old female and a 24-year-old male, both residents of the apartment who had recently moved to Santa Rosa from Southern California. Their names or other identifying details will not be released until official identification has been made by the Coroner and Next of Kin notifications have been made.

VCI detectives served a search warrant at the apartment following the discovery of the bodies and recovered a total of four firearms. The two pistols, one assault rifle, and one shotgun recovered were determined to be owned by the male decedent. It is believed the female suffered multiple gunshot wounds from an assault rifle, and the male suffered at least one gunshot wound from the same firearm. Autopsies for both decedents are expected to be completed today, June 12, 2025.

The nature of the relationship between the decedents is currently being investigated, as is the sequence of events leading to their deaths. Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe this incident was isolated to the apartment and the decedents, and do not believe there is a continued risk to public safety. More information may be released as it becomes available.

This is the eighth homicide in the City of Santa Rosa in 2025.

Santa Rosa Police Department case number 25-6740.
