Santa Rosa Police Department and Santa Rosa Fire Department Celebrate Success of First Annual Women Leaders in Public Safety Symposium

The Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD) and Santa Rosa Fire Department (SRFD) are proud to announce the success of their first annual Women Leaders in Public Safety Symposium. The first-ever event, held to promote diversity and inclusion within public safety leadership, was attended by nearly 60 public safety leaders and future leaders from across the Bay Area. City Manager Maraskeshia Smith, Police Chief John Cregan and Fire Chief Scott Westrope were also in attendance, all of whom shared inspiring words with their motivational opening remarks.

The symposium welcomed participants of all genders and positions within public safety, fostering an environment of shared experiences, insights, and strategies aimed at helping women advance in their careers and make a meaningful impact in their communities.

"Highly qualified and diverse leadership in public safety is essential for addressing the complex challenges faced by our communities," said Chief John Cregan. "When women and other underrepresented groups are included in leadership positions, it fosters a more inclusive and equitable environment, leading to better decision-making and more effective solutions."

Chief Scott Westrope added, "Diverse teams bring a wealth of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, enhancing problem-solving capabilities and leading to innovative and comprehensive solutions. Leaders who reflect the diversity of the communities they serve can build stronger, more trusting relationships with residents, which is crucial for effective community policing and public safety initiatives."

City Manager Maraskeshia Smith emphasized the importance of equity and representation in leadership positions, stating, “Ensuring that leadership positions are accessible to everyone—regardless of gender, race, or background—strengthens representation. This fosters a more fair and inclusive society where all individuals have the opportunity to contribute, thrive, and succeed.”

The symposium featured a series of presentations and panels highlighting the importance of diverse leadership and the positive impact it has on community relations and public safety outcomes, pathways to promotion, and mental wellness and resiliency.

The SRPD and SRFD extend their heartfelt thanks to all who attended and contributed to the success of this event. Additionally, this event would not have been made possible without the support of the Santa Rosa Fire Foundation and symposium donors and sponsors: The Ellsworth Real Estate Group, Santa Rosa Police Management Association, Sonoma County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, Bliss Spa, Cowboy Coffee, Espressioso’s Coffee, Cooperage Brewing Company, and local political leaders Tanya Potter and Ariel Kelly.

We look forward to continuing our efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within our departments and the broader public safety community.
