Two Santa Rosa Men Arrested for Dutton Plaza Shooting
On Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 8:33 p.m., a K-9 Officer from the Santa Rosa Police Department was patrolling near Dutton Avenue and Sebastopol Road when he heard gunfire coming from the Dutton Plaza parking lot. The officer quickly reached out to the victims, who reported being shot at by a suspect wielding a rifle. Although the suspect fired at least four shots, the victims were fortunately unharmed.Officers learned two suspects were responsible for the shooting. They were described as two white males, who fled the scene in a blue Pontiac sedan, heading east on Sebastopol Road. SRPD Patrol Officers located the vehicle in the 900 block of Sebastopol Road, where both suspects were apprehended during a high-risk stop. Inside the vehicle, officers found a high-powered assault rifle. The suspects were identified as 41-year-old Steve Strawn, a convicted felon, and 43-year-old Jared Ambrose. Both residents of Santa Rosa.
The Violent Crimes Investigation Team took over the case as Field and Evidence Technicians processed the scene. Detectives later determined that the shooting was a result of an altercation in the parking lot. After the incident, Strawn and Ambrose retrieved the assault rifle and fired at the victims while driving away, striking nearby buildings.
Following the investigation, detectives executed search warrants at the suspects' residences on Kirkwood Court and Beachwood Drive, uncovering 12 additional firearms, various firearm parts, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
Ambrose was booked into Sonoma County Jail for the following charges:

- 26100(b) PC – Shooting from a Vehicle
- 664/187 PC – Attempted Murder
- 29800(a)(1) PC – Felon in Possession of a Firearm
- 30305(a)(1) PC – Felon in Possession of Ammunition
- 26100(c) PC – Discharging a Firearm from a Vehicle
