SRPD Detectives arrest firearms trafficker after month-long investigation

In late April 2024, detectives from the Santa Rosa Police Department Property Crimes Investigations (PCI) Team began investigating a suspected firearms trafficker operating in Santa Rosa. The suspect attempted to import a firearm precursor part from China, which was intercepted at Customs and turned over to investigators.

On May 28, 2024, PCI detectives alongside special agents from Homeland Security Investigations and a United States Postal Inspector, served a search warrant in the 500 block of El Capitan Way, Santa Rosa. The resident and subject of this investigation, 44-year-old Santa Rosa resident Bon Kim, was at the home at the time of the warrant service. 

During a search of the home, detectives located extensive evidence of firearms trafficking and manufacturing which included several 3D printers and spools of filament, drill presses and manufacturing tools, jigs, and numerous privately manufactured firearms. Kim was in possession of 19 total firearms, two of which are considered short-barreled assault weapons by California law. In addition, Kim possessed high-capacity magazines and ammunition (both prohibited by convicted felons), methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and two expandable batons.

Kim is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms.

Kim was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility for the following charges:

30305(a)(1) PC - Felon in Possession of Ammunition

30600(a) PC - Manufacture an Assault Weapon (2 counts)

30605(a) PC - Possession of an Assault Weapon (2 counts)

33215 PC - Possession of a Short-Barreled Rifle (2 counts)

27585 PC - Importing handgun to California

22210 PC - Possession of an Expandable Baton

29180 PC - Serial Number for Privately Manufactured Firearm (4 counts)

11377(a) HS - Possession of Methamphetamine

11364(a) HS - Possession of drug paraphernalia
