SRPD News Release: Gang-Related Shooting Under Investigation; Detectives Seek Public Assistance

Gang-Related Shooting Under Investigation; Detectives Seek Public Assistance

On November 3, 2026, at approximately 11:38 p.m., the Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD) Communications Center received reports of possible gunfire in the 1200 block of Cedarwood Drive after callers reported hearing a vehicle speeding and "peeling out" followed by sounds consistent with gunshots. Officers responded and quickly determined a shooting had occurred following a physical altercation involving multiple individuals.

During the investigation, officers learned that two victims, both men in their thirties, had been confronted by a group of 3 or 4 suspects who challenged them to a fight and used gang-related language before the confrontation escalated. During the incident, at least one shot was fired. One victim sustained a grazing gunshot wound to his arm, while the other suffered injuries from being hit and kicked in the head during the assault. Both were medically treated and released at the scene by paramedics.

An officer driving to the area shortly after hearing the dispatched call observed a man running from the area where the shooting occurred. The officer detained the man, noting what appeared to be blood on the sleeve of his shirt. As the investigation progressed, it was determined the man the officer detained, Francisco Jesus Suazo, was one of the assailants in this incident. Detectives are continuing to investigate Suazo's exact role in the assault.

The outstanding suspects have not yet been identified and are believed to have left the area in an unknown vehicle prior to police arrival.

Suazo, a 19-year-old resident of Santa Rosa, was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility for the following offenses:

  • 245(b) PC – Assault with a firearm

  • 186.22(a) PC – Criminal street gang participant

  • 186.22(b)(1) PC – Commit a felony for the benefit of a criminal street gang

Detectives with the SRPD Gang Crimes Team and Violent Crimes Investigations Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. They are actively working to identify the outstanding suspects involved in this shooting. No identifying information or photographs of the outstanding suspects are available at this time.

Officers and detectives recovered evidence at the scene, including a spent shell casing and a vehicle struck by gunfire.

On November 4, at approximately 11:15 a.m., detectives served a search warrant at Suazo's residence, located in the 1200 block of Cedarwood Drive. Additional evidence related to this incident was seized. The firearm used in this shooting has not been recovered.

“Over the past several days, Santa Rosa has experienced two serious incidents believed to be gang-related: an 18-year-old man was stabbed multiple times during a large fight near Fulton Road and Casey Drive on November 1, and two days later, this confrontation on Cedarwood Drive that escalated into a shooting, leaving two victims injured,” said Chief John Cregan. “While these incidents appear to be isolated, the close proximity in time is deeply concerning and underscores the ongoing threat that gang violence poses to public safety. These cases highlight the importance of maintaining specialized investigative resources such as our Gang Crimes Investigation Team, whose work is guided by four key priorities: prevention, intervention, education, and enforcement. Their training and expertise are critical to identifying offenders, preventing retaliation, and holding those responsible accountable. Equally important is our strong partnership with the City of Santa Rosa’s Violence Prevention Partnership and other community organizations that work every day to provide positive alternatives to gang involvement, connect individuals and families with resources, and address the root causes of violence. Through this collaborative approach, we remain committed to reducing gang-related crime and keeping our community safe.”

A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered by the Business Alliance of Sonoma County Community Engagement and Safety Rewards Fund for information leading to the identification and arrest of the additional suspects involved in this case.

Detectives are also asking residents and business owners in the area of Cedarwood Drive and surrounding neighborhoods to review any available surveillance footage, including residential security cameras, commercial surveillance systems, and doorbell cameras, for suspicious activity occurring between approximately 10:00 p.m. and midnight on November 3, 2026. Video showing vehicles or individuals in the area may provide critical investigative leads.
