SRPD Violent Crime Detectives Investigating Shooting: 15-Year-Old Victim in Critical Condition
On 6/24/2023 at 8:04 pm, the Santa Rosa Police Department Communications Center received several calls reporting neighbors in the 2000 block of Blacksmith Way heard gunshots and saw one person lying in the roadway. When officers arrived on the scene, they located a teenage male, lying in the roadway. Officers noticed the teen had been shot, was losing blood, and didn’t have a pulse. Officers quickly began CPR and continued medical aid until EMS arrived on the scene. They were able to revive the teen and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived. On the scene, officers located a handgun under the victim, several shell casings, and additional evidence. Detectives from the SRPD Violent Crime Team arrived on the scene and took over the investigation. Detectives and officers searched the area for suspects, witnesses, and evidence.
What is known about the incident so far: Two small groups of males (teens to early 20s) got into an argument on Blacksmith Way, near Arrowhead Drive. At least one person from each group pulled out a handgun and started shooting. The exact number of people involved in the argument and the exact number of shooters are still under investigation. Detectives do believe the involved males were gang participants and detectives are trying to determine if this shooting is related to last week’s homicide. At this time, we have no suspect information to be released to the public.
The victim is a 15-year-old male from Santa Rosa who is currently receiving medical treatment and is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. No additional information about the victim will be released.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting and has information about the suspect(s) is encouraged to contact our Violent Crime Team at 707-543-3590 or online at srcity.org/CrimeTips. If you live in the area of the shooting, please check personal surveillance cameras for footage of the shooting or the suspects fleeing.
A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered by the Sonoma County Alliance Community Engagement and Safety Rewards Fund. The reward is for information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s) involved in this shooting.
Statement from Santa Rosa Police Department Chief John Cregan
This is a moment of reckoning for our community here in Santa Rosa as we grapple to comprehend the tragic incidents affecting young children in our community. We lost a 15-year-old child to gang violence last weekend and a second 15-year-old is fighting for his life after being shot in a gang-related shooting this weekend. If this is not a wake-up call, then I don’t know what is.
I am committed to bringing back our dedicated Gang Crimes Team to focus on reducing the violence on our streets. I am, however, aware that we will not arrest our way out of this problem. We will continue to partner with the Santa Rosa Violence Prevention Partnership and focus on the root causes of gang violence.
It is critical to involve our schools, parents, community leaders, and our youth as we examine strategies to provide alternatives to violence and gang participation. I encourage our community to join us at the Santa Rosa Violence Prevention Partnership Strategic Planning session on Tuesday, June 27th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Roseland University Prep. If we come together as a community, we can make a measurable difference for our youth.
