SRPD News Release: Subject Safely Detained Following Incident on Sonoma County Bus

Subject Safely Detained Following Incident on Sonoma County Bus

On May 24, 2026, at approximately 9:21 P.M., officers responded to the area of Mendocino Ave and McConnell Ave regarding a subject on top of a Sonoma County bus who had called 911 repeatedly asking for help.

Upon arrival, officers safely cleared the bus of riders and secured the scene. Officers communicated with the subject and repeatedly offered assistance; however, the subject refused to come down from the bus.

Due to the subject's elevated position, officers exercised restraint and employed de-escalation techniques while evaluating the safest means of resolution. Officers determined that initiating physical contact could increase the risk of injury to the subject, officers, or bystanders. The area was secured, traffic control measures were implemented, and officers continued working toward a peaceful resolution.

On May 25, 2026, at approximately 6:56 A.M., the subject came down from the bus and was safely detained without injury. Byron Poindexter, a 47 year old Pittsburg, California resident, was arrested and charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (11364(a) HS) and Being Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance (11550(a) HS). He was booked at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility.

The Santa Rosa Police Department appreciates the public's patience while officers worked to resolve this incident safely and peacefully.
