Traffic Stop Leads to Large Fentanyl Seizure

On 12/6/25, at approximately 1426 hours, a SRPD patrol officer conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle for a vehicle code violation in the 2500 block of Cleveland Av, Santa Rosa. As the officer approached the vehicle, he observed the driver reaching toward the back of the front, passenger seat. The officer contacted the driver, and sole occupant, who appeared visibly nervous. The driver was identified as 37-year-old Santa Rosa resident, Fabian Chavez-Carranza.

The officer obtained consent from Chavez-Carranza to search his vehicle and a SCSO detection K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics odor during a free air sniff of the vehicle. The officer conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and located approximately one kilogram of suspected fentanyl concealed in the back of the front passenger seat.

That amount of fentanyl is considered to be approximately 50,000 lethal doses.

Chavez-Carranza was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County jail for the following violations:
- 11351 H&S - Possession of a Narcotic for Sale.
- 11352 H&S - Transportation of a Narcotic for Sale.

A bail enhancement was obtained in the amount of $100,000.00.
