Cache In, Trash Out cleanup event happening in Kirksville parks

(Kirksville, MO) - Kirksville Parks and Recreation and local geocachers are getting together once again to celebrate Worldwide Cleanup Day with a Cache In, Trash Out (CITO) event on Saturday, September 19.

This effort unites geocachers around the world with one goal: to care for the places they play.

Local geocachers and outdoor enthusiasts will work to remove trash and other items from local parks on that day. They will start at Hazel Creek Lake, meeting at the south boat ramp parking lot at 9:00 am, and move to Spur Pond at 1:30 pm.

Trash will be collected from the shoreline with grabber sticks and from the water with magnet fishing lines. Come and join in a friendly competition to collect the most trash, the biggest piece of trash and the most unique trash at either location.

To further celebrate this day, Kirksville Parks and Recreation is launching its first geocaches within our park system. We have some sneaky treasures scattered across the parks, so keep an eye out while geocaching in town.

In case you don’t know what geocaching is, it is essentially an outdoor treasure-hunting game. Players use a smartphone or GPS device to hide and seek containers called geocaches. You can log when you find a geocache, and sometimes they have a little trinket as a reward. There are dozens of geocaches around Kirksville and Thousand Hills State Park.
