Special Planning and Zoning meeting, public hearing on data center regulation being held Sept. 16

(Kirksville, MO) - The City of Kirksville’s Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a special meeting and public hearing regarding data center zoning regulations at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, September 16, in the Little Theatre (Room 102) at Truman State University’s Baldwin Hall.

Because of strong public interest in this topic, we have arranged a larger space so all interested residents can attend and offer input during the discussion.

This meeting will discuss a zoning proposal for data centers. As a reminder, the City Council seeks to establish specific zoning standards for any proposed data center development within the city limits. Zoning and licensing are the City's primary tools for regulating data center development, as no city can ban businesses otherwise allowed by the State of Missouri.

This process aims to restrict these facilities to areas zoned as heavy industrial, where space in the city is limited and not adjacent to residential areas. Additional regulations will be created to protect community interests if any development comes forward.

The public hearing portion will begin the meeting. Anyone wishing to address the commission will have five minutes to do so. Following that community input, the Planning and Zoning Commission will consider voting to recommend the proposal to the City Council. The zoning proposal will be available on the City website as part of the agenda packet for this meeting, so residents will have the chance to review it before the meeting.
