Contracted street improvements to begin downtown next week

(Kirksville, MO) - The City of Kirksville wants to inform residents of contracted street improvements for the Downtown Business District that will begin next week. Work will be done overnight – between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am – to reduce impacts.

This project will use pressure paving, an asphalt preservation technique where material is injected into cracks well below the street surface. It creates a durable seal on the surface and stabilization underground. This can extend the road life by 12 years or more.

Heartland Traffic Services will begin removing pavement markings the evening of Monday, August 17. Donelson Construction will begin its resurfacing work on Monday, August 24. The resurfacing work is expected to be completed by the end of that week. Pavement markings will then be redone the week of August 31.

There will be no parking on the affected streets listed below from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. Any vehicles left in a construction zone will be towed. The list of affected streets is as follows:
  • Main Street, from Cottonwood Street to Jefferson Street
  • Elson Street, from Illinois Street to Jefferson Street
  • Franklin Street, from Illinois Street to Jefferson Street
  • Missouri Street, from Marion Street to Elson Street
  • Harrison Street, from Marion Street westward beyond the intersection with Main Street
  • Washington Street, from Marion Street westward beyond the intersection with Main Street
  • McPherson Street, from Franklin Street westward to where the street ends
As a reminder, there are public parking lots available on the corner of East Jefferson Street and South Marion Street, and the corner of East McPherson Street and South Marion Street. Access to the public parking lot on the corner of West McPherson Street and South Elson Street, the lot on the corner of West Missouri Street and North Main Street, and the lot in front of Downtown Cinema 8 will be dependent on construction of the adjacent streets.

The paving work will be staggered. Construction will begin on the east-west streets at the start of the week before moving to the north-south streets.

Please pay attention to signage and personnel if traveling near this area during construction hours. Traffic coordinators will be present to direct vehicles and answer questions.

If residents want to keep tabs on the project as it goes, Donelson Construction has a site that will be updated at crewcastapp.com/projects/64?source=share.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation during this street improvement project. We look forward to having these improved roadways in downtown.
