City Council approves ordinance regulating sale of kratom products
(Kirksville, MO) - The Kirksville City Council has approved an ordinance regulating the sale of kratom products and prohibiting the sale of synthetic kratom products in the city. This move comes after discussions with the Adair County Health Department and its partners, and follows similar actions from other Missouri cities.
This ordinance provides a layer of protection for the community's youth.
Products made with synthetic kratom (7-OH), designed for inhalation or vaping, and packaged or labeled to resemble candy or snacks are prohibited.
Products made with natural kratom may only be sold to individuals over the age of 21. They must be stored and displayed behind the counter.
Kratom products must also include a list of ingredients and alkaloid content, a warning that the product is not intended for people under 21, recommended dosage information, a disclaimer of potential health risks, and that the FDA has not evaluated the product.
The Kirksville Police Department will oversee enforcement of this ordinance and is contacting retailers to inform them of the change and work with them toward compliance. If a retailer is found to be in violation, it is subject to a fine, and its business license may be suspended or revoked.
