City still needs assistance from residents to complete water service line inventory
(Kirksville, MO) - The City of Kirksville has sent a second round of letters to all of its water service customers, per a required annual program, as the City continues its mandated inventory of water service lines.
The City sent letters one year ago asking residents to check their service lines and complete a survey indicating whether their service line is lead or another material. Many customers responded, but the City is still required to make this annual contact.
All water systems across the country are federally mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to complete an inventory of water service line materials, both publicly and privately owned, to check for lead. Every public water system is required to identify the primary material of each service line, specifically if it is lead, galvanized, or non-lead (copper or PVC). Currently, the City has not identified any lead service lines in its system, and regular testing has not shown elevated lead levels. However, there are still service lines of unknown material, and we will continue requesting assistance in identifying the materials until all are identified.
The City needs help from both residents and property owners who receive one of these letters to identify their private service line material. If you have not previously completed the survey, please help the City and yourself by completing it at Kirksville.gov/p/lead. That link includes additional information on this project that may be helpful. Those who own multiple properties should submit entries for each property.
To assist in the identification process, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources prepared a short video on water service line pipe identification and procedures to follow. That video can be found on the same page of our website shown above. If you still have questions after viewing that video, contact our Public Works Department at 660.627.1291, and someone there will assist you.
We encourage our residents to stay informed and contact the Public Works Department with any questions. Your participation and cooperation are both valued and appreciated.
