Fall is just around the corner and Sandy’s September newsletter is packed with ways to stay informed, prepared and connected. Happy September, Sandy City! As summer winds down, there are still plenty of opportunities to connect with our community and get involved. In this month’s Council newsletter, learn how you can serve on one of three citizen advisory committees, welcome the 54 students joining the 2026–27 Sandy Youth Council and find details about upcoming September City Council meetings. Sandy City welcomed Jeff Nigbur as its new Chief of Police during a swearing-in ceremony held August 26 at Sandy City Hall. Chief Nigbur brings more than 25 years of law enforcement experience to the role, joining Sandy City from the Utah Department of Public Safety and Utah Highway Patrol. Throughout his career, he has served with several specialty units and overseen patrol operations, special operations, high-profile events and public safety policy.

Under Chief Nigbur’s leadership, the Sandy City Police Department will continue its mission to provide the highest quality police services through strong community partnerships, innovative programs and its core values of integrity, service, commitment and excellence.

On Tuesday, August 11, the Sandy City Council voted to place the Crescent View property bond proposition on the November 3, 2026, general election ballot. Voters will decide whether the City can borrow up to $30 million to purchase the former Crescent View Middle School property and cover related costs. Saddle up and celebrate Sandy’s roots! Join us Saturday, September 19, for the Heritage Festival and Horse Parade at Main Street Park. Enjoy live music, food, vendors, pony rides, a classic car show, bounce houses, face painting and activities for the whole family. The horse parade begins at 10 a.m., followed by the festival from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Honor. Remember. Reflect. Visit the Utah Healing Field at the Sandy City Promenade from September 10 through 14. More than 3,350 American flags will honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, along with Utah officers, first responders and K9 officers who died in the line of duty. Volunteers are needed to help set up and take down the display. Visit the event page to sign up and learn more.

Connect, explore and have fun! Join Sandy City’s first responders and autism community for a Food & Fun Night on Monday, September 14, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the south side of Sandy City Hall. Meet local first responders, explore emergency vehicles, enjoy arts and crafts, play family-friendly lawn games, discover community autism resources and share dinner together.

Help shape Sandy’s future! Sandy City is updating its Land Development Code, which guides housing, businesses, transportation, parks and neighborhood design throughout the community. Stop by the Blueprint for Progress information booth at the Heritage Festival on Saturday, September 19, to meet the project team, learn about the proposed updates and ask questions. Community input is an important part of the process. 

Get ready for your next adventure! Join us Friday, September 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Passport Palooza, a one-stop event where you can submit your passport application, have your photo taken, make required payments and get help navigating the process. Money orders will be available for a $2 fee with cash payment. Families can also enjoy treats, event-exclusive swag and travel-themed activities for kids. Please bring all required documents and appropriate forms of payment.

Registration is open for the 2026 Sandy Visual Art Show! All artists will publicly exhibit and have an opportunity to sell their artwork. Winners receive cash prizes. The gallery is free and open to the public from October 6-16 at the Sandy Senior Center.

Online registration closes September 29. In person registration is available during art drop off on September 30.
