Town of Provincetown Encourages Residents to Begin Preparing for Coastal Storms Ahead of Winter Storm Season

Begin Preparing for Coastal Storms Ahead of Winter Storm Season

As we have seen with recent hurricanes in the south, it’s essential that we begin planning early for potential winter and coastal storms affecting our area. The Town of Provincetown encourages all residents to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety and to protect their property, including attending a Coastal Resilience Engagement Event this Thursday, October 10th at Town Hall.

Here are important tips to help you prepare for winter and coastal storms:

  • Stay Informed: Sign up for local emergency alerts to receive critical information before, during, and after storms. Sign up for emergency alerts from the Town via text message, email, or phone call at https://alerts.provincetown-ma.gov/. Please encourage your friends, neighbors, and others to subscribe as well.

  • Know Your Risk: Check if your property is in a flood-prone or high-risk area by using FEMA’s flood maps.

  • Emergency Plan: Create or review your family emergency plan. If you live or work in a flood zone, hurricane evacuation zone, or an area prone to flooding, be ready to evacuate.

  • Medical Care: If you rely on home health care or medical treatments, plan with your provider for uninterrupted care if you need to evacuate or shelter in place.

  • Emergency Kit: Assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies including food, water, medications, and batteries.

  • Power Outages: Prepare for possible outages by having devices charges, flashlights, and batteries on hand. Consider purchasing a generator to provide power during an outage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and learn how to use it safely before an outage. If you have life-support devices or other medical equipment or supplies which depend on electricity, notify your utility and work with your medical provider to prepare for power outages.

  • Document Your Property: Take photos or videos of your belongings to document your personal property, and store the records in a safe, dry place.

  • Hazardous Materials: Store any chemicals and other potential hazards you might have in watertight containers or above base flood elevation, per FEMA flood maps.

  • Flood Insurance: Flood losses are often not covered under regular insurance policies. Consider purchasing flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Plan (NFIP).
