Nor’easter Update: Prepare for High Winds, Possible Power Outages & Flooding

The Town of Provincetown is preparing for a prolonged Nor’easter beginning today and continuing through the weekend. Strong winds, heavy rain, possible coastal flooding and dangerous surf are expected. Residents should finish preparations before conditions worsen this afternoon and evening.

What to expect

• Strong winds and outages: A High Wind Warning is in effect from 8 a.m. Friday through 2 a.m. Sunday. Coastal gusts of 45–60 mph are possible. Winds and fully leafed trees increase the risk of downed limbs and power outages.
• Flooding from rain and high tides: The National Weather Service now forecasts 3–5 inches of rain over the next 72 hours. Flooding is possible in low-lying and poor-drainage areas, particularly in the West End of town. A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for east-facing Massachusetts shorelines, where minor flooding, pockets of moderate flooding, and beach erosion are possible over multiple high tides.
• Timing: Rain and winds will increase today. The most hazardous conditions are expected Friday night and Saturday, with impacts continuing into Sunday. The storm may bring unsettled weather into early next week.
• Dangerous shore and marine conditions: A High Surf Advisory and marine Storm Warnings are in effect. Stay away from beaches, piers, breakwaters and other exposed coastal areas. Mariners should remain in port during hazardous conditions.

• Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, signs, trash containers and other loose items.
• Move vehicles and valuables away from areas that flood during heavy rain or high tides. Clear gutters and nearby drains where it is safe to do so.
• Charge phones and backup batteries. Gather medications, food, water, flashlights and supplies for anyone who depends on powered medical equipment.
• Plan for an outage that could last more than a day. Eversource has positioned crews across Cape Cod and is preparing for the possibility of a multi-day restoration effort. Report outages directly to Eversource. Stay away from downed wires and report them to 911 and the utility.
• Never walk or drive through floodwater. Operate generators outdoors, well away from doors, windows and vents. Check on neighbors who may need assistance.
