Nor’easter Expected to Impact Provincetown Sunday, October 12 –Tuesday, October 14
The National Weather Service has forecast long-duration coastal storm expected to impact our area from Sunday midday, October 12 through Tuesday morning, October 14.
A Nor’easter with winds from the North/Northeast will bring heavy rain, strong winds, and rough coastal conditions. These wind directions have a history of impacting the West End of town.
Storm Highlights & Forecasts:
- Timing: Sunday afternoon through early Tuesday
- Rain: 3–4 inches expected for Provincetown and the Outer Cape, with the heaviest rain Sunday night through Monday night.
- Flash flooding is not expected, but minor street and poor-drainage flooding may occur.
- Wind: Sustained winds 15–35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph (strongest Sunday night into Monday morning).
- Winds may cause downed branches, isolated power outages, and hazardous travel for high-profile vehicles.
- Coastal Flooding: A Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning through late Monday night.
- Minor coastal flooding and beach erosion are possible, especially during the Sunday and Monday evening high tides.
- Greatest impacts expected along east- and north-facing beaches and the West End waterfront.
- Marine Conditions: The National Weather Service has issued a Storm Watch for coastal waters. Rough seas and strong winds will make conditions dangerous for small craft. Mariners should stay in port.
Stay Informed:
- Sign up for Town alerts (text, email, phone) at https://alerts.provincetown-ma.gov/ and urge friends and neighbors to do the same.
- Monitor updates from the Town, the NWS, and trusted news outlets.
- Clear leaves and debris from storm drains and catch basins near your property.
- Deploy sandbags, particularly in low-lying areas that have flooded in previous Nor’easters.
- Elevate or remove items stored in basements or any area susceptible to flooding.
- Alert neighbors (especially those out of town) to the forecast so they can take protective measures.
- Inspect and replace damaged outdoor electrical cords/outlets. Use only weather-rated extension cords outdoors.
- Charge all devices ahead of the storm.
- Keep flashlights, portable radios, and extra batteries easily accessible.
- Stock up on nonperishable foods, water, medications, blankets, and essential supplies.
- Keep refrigerators closed as much as possible; in a full fridge, food may stay good for 36–48 hours; in a half-full fridge, about 24 hours.
- Avoid outdoor activity during peak wind periods.
- Secure loose items (furniture, decorations) or bring them indoors.
- Trim or remove any weak, dead, or overhanging tree limbs near homes or wires.
- High-profile vehicles (trucks, vans, trailers, SUVs) are more vulnerable to strong gusts — drive with caution or avoid travel during peak winds.
- Bottled water and nonperishable food
- Flashlights, radio, extra batteries
- Phone chargers / power banks
- Basic first-aid kit and medications
- Any special medical or personal care equipment/items
