Town of Telluride: Winter Travel Conditions, Windrow Notification
Winter Travel Conditions, Windrow Notification | Wednesday, December 3
Over 5 inches of snow fell overnight, and our plow crews have been working hard to clear the streets. Please give yourself extra time to get around town today, especially on narrow roads where windrows have formed.
What are windrows?
Windrows are the long, narrow piles of snow that plows leave at the edge of the road. They form because the plow has to push snow to the side to keep the street clear and safe for travel. This is a normal and expected part of snow removal in our mountain town.
Why do they happen?
When the plow moves forward, it pushes heavy, packed snow off the driving lane. That snow has to go somewhere, so it builds up in a line—this is the windrow. Big storms, tight streets, and parked cars can make windrows larger.
How you can help:
- When clearing a windrow around your vehicle or driveway, move snow to snow storage areas. Snow should be shoveled out of the right of way to yards and greenspace, or in front of or behind your vehicle without impacting neighboring vehicles.
- Shovel your sidewalks as soon as you can. Be sure to shovel into snow storage areas, like yards and greenspace.
- Do not push or throw snow back into the street. This makes it harder for plows to keep the roads safe and can create hazards for drivers and pedestrians. Not to mention, it's against the Town's municipal code and you could be cited.
- Clear snow from the flow line (the edge where the street meets the curb). Clear at least 10" from the curb. This helps melting snow drain properly so it doesn’t freeze into ice later.
Windrows are a natural part of snowstorms in Telluride. Thank you for your patience, teamwork, and care as we all work to keep our community safe and moving.
Stay warm, and enjoy the snow!
