Leaf Collection Reminders for Residents

Wheaton Informs
As the leaves start to fall, the City of Wheaton reminds residents of proper leaf disposal options.

Curbside Leaf Collection:
  • You can use containers no larger than 35 gallons in size or biodegradable paper bags.
  • Each container or biodegradable bag must weigh no more than 50 pounds.
  • Each container or biodegradable bag must have 1 yard waste/organics/garbage sticker attached to be collected. See the list of locations where you can purchase stickers.
  • Yard waste, leaves, food scraps, and other organic materials are collected at the curb on your regular garbage day from the first full week of April through the second full week of December. This year, the week of Dec. 8 is the final week for leaf collection.
Environmentally Friendly Option:
  • An environmentally friendly alternative to bagging leaves is to mulch them into your lawn or garden beds. Using a lawnmower with a mulching function can break down leaves into small pieces, allowing them to be either collected and spread into garden beds or finely shredded into lawns to break down.
Keep Leaves Out of the Street:
  • When you’re cleaning up leaves, please be careful not to blow or rake them into the street. Doing so can prevent storm sewers from functioning properly and lead to flooding.
  • If your house is located near a storm sewer catch basin, please help keep it clear by sweeping away leaves and debris from the sewer grate.
Leaf Burning Prohibited:
•    Leaf burning is not permitted in the City of Wheaton.
