Election Updates

Official election results for the November 2, 2021 election are now available, find them here. Following a recount that began on November 9th at Ocean Gateway, Roberto Rodriguez has been declared the winner of the At-Large City Council race. Read the full story.

We need your help to remove leaves from neighborhood streets before we head into winter, and we are running out of time to sweep before it gets too cold at night. Street sweeping operations and regulations have been in effect since October 1, but our performance has been compromised due to lack of public compliance. Cars not in compliance with the City's Street Maintenance Signs will be subject to towing. Visit portlandmaine.gov/streetmaintenance to learn more.

Ocean Gateway Garage - Closing Date Extended
Thanks to unprecedented good weather the closing date for daily parking at the Ocean Gateway Lot has been extended to Monday, November 29. Find more information on where to park in Portland here

Last Week for Fall Curbside Leaf Pickup: November 15 - 19

Curbside leaf pickup ends next week. Place your biodegradable leaf bags curbside by 6:30 AM on your normal trash/recycling day and City crews will collect them. If you still have leaves to dispose of after the leaf collection truck has gone through your neighborhood, you can take them to Riverside Recycling for disposal. Learn more.
 

Monument Square Tree Arrives Next Week!

The Monument Square 2021 Tree is a 40' Balsam Fir it will be coming from the Riverton area. Work to move the tree will start around 8:00 AM on Thursday, November 18 with the tree move to Monument Square starting about 9:00 AM. The tree route will be via Forest Avenue to State Street, left onto Congress Street to Monument Square pending construction work zone review.
 

Virtual Annual District Meetings: Starting November 17

Annual district meetings will be held remotely during the months of November and December. All meetings will be from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. District 1: Wednesday, December 1; District 2: Wednesday, December 15; District 3, Thursday, November 18; District 4 Tuesday, November 30; District 5: Wednesday,  November 17. Ocean Gateway Lot - Winter Lottery
Thirty (30) parking spaces will again be made available to island residents selected by lottery; this temporary program will run from December 1, 2021 to April 30, 2022. Only one entry per household is permitted. Fill out this form to enter. Information requests and questions can be directed to: islandparking@portlandmaine.gov.

The Daily Path - Temporary Art Installation
A new public art project started appearing on the sidewalks around downtown and the West End the first week of November. The project uses temporary marking paint to show the walking paths of several Portland residents over the course of one day. The artwork was created by artist Caitlin Cameron with support from the Kindling Fund, a re-granting program of the Andy Warhol Foundation, administered by SPACE Gallery. The installation was reviewed and approved for a temporary art permit through the City of Portland. The lines are expected to weather and fade over the course of several months. PPD Holiday Toy Drive: Toys for Tots

The Portland Police Department is collecting new, unwrapped toys for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots this holiday season! The department will host a toy drop-off on Wednesday, December 8, 2:00 PM-6:00 PM at the Portland Police Department, 109 Middle Street. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to the outdoor patio during these hours if you would like to donate. Contact Community Policing Coordinator Janine Kaserman at 207-756-8135, with any questions or for more information.

Baxter Boulevard Traffic Impacts
 

November 1-19: Baxter Boulevard Additional Traffic Impacts

The Baxter Boulevard Closure will be extended from Dartmouth Street to Preble Street starting Monday, November 1. Dartmouth Street at Ricker Park will also be closed. This closure is scheduled to last three weeks through the end of day, Tuesday, November 19. Full details.   

 

Baxter Boulevard from Payson Park to Dartmouth Street is closed. Vannah Avenue is closed from Clifton Street to Baxter Boulevard. This closure is scheduled to last until December 2022. Back Cove Trail is open during the entire construction project. Full details.

 

Ocean Avenue Sewer Separation Project
The nearby sewer separation project on Ocean Avenue is nearing completion and should be wrapped up in November. Ocean Avenue is still down to one lane during the day (approximately 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM) while they do construction work using flaggers. However, the road is open to two-way traffic on nights and weekends. Full details.
