Alert: Portland Cooling Centers Open July 1-3 Due to Extreme Temperatures

City Activates Cooling Centers July 1 - 3 Due to Extreme Temperatures

The downtown Portland Public Library at 5 Monument Square will serve as Portland’s cooling center on Wednesday, July 1 and Thursday, July 2 during its normal hours of 10 AM to 6 PM. On Friday, July 3, the Troubh Ice Arena at 225 Park Avenue will serve as the cooling center from 10 AM to 5 PM.

The City of Portland is activating its cooling centers per its cooling center protocol as the National Weather Service has indicated there will be hazardous heat from Wednesday through Friday and  Portland is included in an Extreme Heat Watch as heat indices (feels like temps) around 105-110° are likely.

In addition to the cooling centers, the City urges people to take advantage of the Deering Oaks Ravine wading pool and the several splash pads around the city. The City’s new outdoor pool - the Rising Eddy Community Pool - will not be opening until Monday, July 6. However, the new pool includes an adjacent splash pad that will be open to the public on Friday, July 3.

People are urged to limit outdoor activities, drink plenty of water, and wear light colored clothing. We ask that you check on your elderly neighbors to make sure they are okay, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
