AlertAnnapolis - Weather Alert: Gale Warning and Coastal Flood Watch issued for Annapolis tomorrow (10/12)
This is an important message from the City of Annapolis Office of Emergency Management:
OEM is continuing to monitor a coastal low storm system and potential associated impacts, most notably strong wind gusts, minor to moderate coastal flooding, and rain for tomorrow and Monday. Total rainfall amounts (1-1.5 inches) and wind gusts (25-35 mph) have seen a decrease since yesterday, as the storm system is now anticipated to move more eastward along the coastline!
However, rough seas are likely due to strong winds, which may impact marine conditions for current special events, such as the ongoing Annapolis Sailboat Show. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Gale Warning for a majority of the Chesapeake Bay (including Annapolis), which will go into effect from 6:00 AM tomorrow morning until 6:00 AM Monday morning. Expect northeast winds 20-30 knots (with gusts up to 40 knots) and large waves that may potentially capsize/damage vessels.
NWS has also issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for the threat of minor coastal flooding (2.8 ft MLLW), which will go into effect from 7:00 PM tonight to 1:00 AM early tomorrow morning, and a Coastal Flood Watch for the threat of potentially moderate coastal flooding (3.0 ft MLLW), which will go into effect sometime in the evening tomorrow and continue through the overnight hours into Monday morning. This may potentially impact low-lying areas of the City, notably City Dock, Compromise St, and Eastport, during periods of evening high tides. Notable high tide times for potential coastal flooding during this period are:
- Tonight (10/11): 10:01 PM – 2.8 ft MLLW (or greater)
- Tomorrow Night (10/12): 11:05 PM – 3.0 ft MLLW (or greater)
PREPAREDNESS TIPS:
- Avoid navigating through waters with strong winds (even without rain) while faced with harsh marine conditions!
- If flooding impacts develop, be prepared for temporary road closures and alternate traffic patterns. Remember not to drive through standing water or around barricades!
- Be sure to have two ways to receive alerts and warnings!
