For the week ending Sunday, Oct. 19. 2025 … Your Lytle P.D. Officers handled 46 calls for service and conducted 59 traffic stops. Of those 59 stops, 29 resulted in a citation and 30 were warnings. Our goal is not to write tickets; our goal is traffic compliance and safety. Some people think the more tickets we write the more money the police department gets. The fact is the money from the citations all goes to the city’s general fund, which the state gets about half of! Let me make this clear, I am not in the business of “making money” for the City of Lytle. If I was, I would have a lot of good ideas… installing pay toilets at the city park and requiring all city employees to purchase parking permits, just to name a couple.
The P.D. had four arrests last week. #1 – Capt. Dear and Sgt. D. Lopez, responded to the H.E.B. Plus for a report of a shoplifter. A 43-year-old female was arrested for public intoxication, resisting arrest, and felony harassment. She was just walking around the store eating and drinking alcohol like it was her fridge at home. She resisted arrests and spit on Capt. Dear a couple of times. She picked up a felony charge for that. #2 (Ofc. Cortez/Ofc. Diaz) – A traffic stop for speeding on FM 2790 resulted in the arrest of a 51-year-old male for D.W.I. (open container). #3 (Ofc. Cortez/Ofc. Diaz) – Officers initiated a traffic on Main St. for speeding resulted in a pursuit. The pursuit ended on the IH-35 NB access road, just south of the city limits. A 43-year-old male was arrested for evading arrest with a motor vehicle, evading arrest on foot, and felon in possession of a firearm. #4 - (Ofc. Cortez/Ofc. Diaz) A traffic stop on Main St. resulted in the arrest of a 46-year-old male for D.W.I. 2nd offense and possession of marijuana. Yes, Ofc. J. Cortez and Ofc. L. Diaz had a busy week.
We are hiring, so if you have a Texas Peace Office license check us out. You can get spit on and chase armed felons, it’s either a lot of fun or the worst job out there. It’s a “calling” for sure.
We had two incidents that fit under property crimes. #1 – The intoxicated female at the H.E.B. Plus who was arrested (See arrest #1). #2 – Trophy Buck on the IH-35 access road reported that an unknown large truck drove over their septic tank and caused $15,000 in damage. We don’t believe it was done on purpose.
Cpl. Danny Robison texted me on Saturday and reminded me that Oct. 18th was my work anniversary. That makes 26 years of full-time service as the Chief of Police. That’s a long to time, it must be God’s plan. I certainly couldn’t have planned this. I look forward to coming to work each day, which has never changed. When that changes, I’ll “check out.”
In the past we have initiated some temporary road closures on Halloween night. N. Prairie St. is the primary street that we shut down. This year Halloween falls on a Friday, there will be a home football game, and our primary school has a new addition under construction. Since that is the area where all the parking for “trick or treaters” is located, we will not be shutting down N. Prairie St. Our dynamics have changed, and our two new subdivisions (Rosewood Estates and Saddle Ridge) offer additional opportunities for those seeking candy. The homes are more condensed. Using a simple Halloween formula that includes the distance walked, homes visited, and the weight of the candy collected …. The yield is better. I am somewhat of a math guy … I took Algebra II twice in high school.
